BACKGROUND

The conflict between Russia and Ukraine has been ongoing since 2014, following Russia’s annexation of Crimea and the outbreak of fighting in eastern Ukraine between Kyiv’s forces and Moscow-backed separatists. Despite multiple ceasefire agreements, clashes have continued, with both sides accusing each other of violations. The war escalated dramatically in February 2022 when Russia launched a full-scale invasion, triggering widespread destruction, civilian casualties, and a deep humanitarian crisis. International sanctions against Russia, along with military aid to Ukraine, have further intensified tensions. The recent claim by Russia about killing Ukrainian soldiers comes amid this volatile backdrop, fueling mistrust and raising concerns of further escalation.
