At
least eight people lost their lives after a strong earthquake shook parts of
Afghanistan and Pakistan, causing fear and damage across the region.
The
earthquake, measuring 5.8 in magnitude, struck on Friday, April 3, 2026, in the
late afternoon. It was recorded at around 5:39 PM local time (1309 GMT), when
many people were still going about their daily routines. The sudden tremors
caught residents off guard, forcing many to rush out of their homes and
buildings in panic.
The
epicenter of the quake was located in the mountainous Hindu Kush region, a
well-known seismic zone. It was situated roughly 130 to 150 kilometers
northeast or east of Kabul, and about 290 kilometers from the Afghan capital.
Despite being centered in a remote area, the earthquake’s impact was felt
across a wide region due to its considerable depth of more than 180 kilometers
beneath the surface.
Because
of this depth, the shaking spread far beyond the epicenter, reaching major
cities in Pakistan including Islamabad and Peshawar. Residents in these areas
reported noticeable tremors, with some describing several seconds of swaying
that led to temporary panic, although no significant damage or casualties were
immediately reported there.
Tragically,
the worst impact was recorded in Afghanistan. In a heartbreaking incident on
the outskirts of Kabul, a house collapsed as a result of the shaking, killing
at least eight members of the same family. Among the victims were women and
children, highlighting the devastating human cost of the disaster. A child who
survived the collapse was reported injured and was taken for medical treatment.
The
earthquake was caused by natural tectonic movements in the Hindu Kush region,
where several geological fault lines make the area prone to frequent seismic
activity. Earthquakes in this region are not uncommon, but their impact can be
severe, especially in communities where buildings are not constructed to
withstand strong shaking.
Witnesses
described the tremors as lasting around 30 seconds, long enough to create
widespread fear. Many people ran into open spaces, fearing aftershocks or
building collapses. In rural and mountainous areas closer to the epicenter,
communication and rescue efforts were slowed due to difficult terrain and
limited infrastructure, raising concerns that the full extent of damage might
take time to emerge.
This
incident once again highlights the vulnerability of communities in Afghanistan
and nearby regions, where deep earthquakes, combined with fragile housing
structures and challenging geography, often lead to tragic consequences. It
also underscores the urgent need for improved building standards and disaster
preparedness to reduce the risk of loss of life in future events.
