Deadly Collision in Guzara District Leaves Dozens Burned 76 Died After Bus Ignites in Flames

A tragic accident in western Afghanistan left 76 people dead after a passenger bus carrying Afghans returning from Iran collided with a motorcycle and then a fuel truck in the Guzara district of Herat province, setting the bus ablaze. The incident occurred on the evening of August 19, 2025, along the busy Herat–Islam Qala highway. The vehicle had started its journey from the Islam Qala border crossing and was heading toward Herat city when disaster struck. Officials later confirmed that among the dead were 37 men, 21 women, and 18 children, while two people in the truck and two on the motorcycle also lost their lives. Only three passengers from the bus managed to survive the inferno. Authorities attributed the cause of the crash to overspeeding and negligence on the part of the bus driver. The catastrophe unfolded amid a wave of forced returns from Iran and Pakistan, with as many as 1.5 to 1.6 million Afghans crossing back into their homeland in 2025. Many of these returnees face severe shortages of shelter, health care, and basic necessities, which has made the impact of this disaster even more severe.

A tragic road accident in western Afghanistan claimed 76 lives when a passenger bus carrying Afghans recently returned from Iran struck a motorcycle and then crashed into a fuel truck in Guzara district of Herat province, setting the bus ablaze.

The collision happened on the evening of Tuesday, August 19, 2025, along the busy Herat–Islam Qala highway.

The ill-fated vehicle had started its journey from Islam Qala, the border crossing with Iran, and was headed towards Herat city at the time of the disaster.

Local authorities later confirmed that at least 76 people were killed in the catastrophe, among them 17 children.

The victims included 37 men, 21 women, and 18 children, showing that entire families were wiped out in the inferno.

In addition to the bus passengers, two people in the truck and two on the motorcycle also lost their lives, while only three passengers from the bus managed to survive.

Police officials attributed the deadly accident to reckless driving and high speed, which led to the devastating collision and fire.

This calamity unfolded against the backdrop of a mass return of Afghans from neighboring Iran, where between 1.5 and 1.6 million people have been forced back to their homeland in 2025.

Those who cross the border often face dire conditions, including a lack of housing, minimal medical support, and deep poverty, which has further magnified the tragedy of this deadly crash.

BACKGROUND:

The deadly bus crash in Herat province occurred against the backdrop of Afghanistan’s ongoing economic and social crisis. Thousands of Afghans continue to migrate to Iran in search of employment due to widespread poverty and limited opportunities at home. However, many of these workers face deportation or return voluntarily when conditions become difficult across the border. Overcrowded and poorly maintained vehicles on Afghanistan’s highways, combined with weak traffic regulation and inadequate road infrastructure, have long contributed to such disasters. In this case, the bus carrying returnees from Iran was heavily packed and traveling on a dangerous route where road safety measures are minimal, ultimately leading to the catastrophic accident.
