IAEA Confirms Attack on Auxiliary Facility of Europe’s Largest Nuclear Plant

On 2 August 2025, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) team stationed at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) heard explosions.

The IAEA team also saw smoke rising from a nearby location during the afternoon.

One of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant’s auxiliary facilities was attacked on 2 August 2025, according to Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant officials.

The auxiliary facility of Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant is located approximately 1,200 metres from the plant’s perimeter.

Military activity was heard near 9 a.m. local time, as the auxiliary facility came under shelling and drone attack.

Smoke remained visible from the direction of the attacked facility well into the afternoon.

Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant is Europe’s largest nuclear power plant.

Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant has been under Russian control since March 2022 but remains non-operational.

International Atomic Energy Agency inspectors remain on-site to continuously monitor the situation.

International Atomic Energy Agency Director General Rafael Grossi said any attack near a nuclear facility poses a risk and must be avoided.

BACKGROUND
The Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, located in southern Ukraine, has been a focal point of international concern since Russian forces seized control of the facility in March 2022. Despite the occupation, Ukrainian staff continue to operate the plant, which remains in a cold shutdown state to minimize nuclear risks. Throughout the ongoing conflict, the site has faced repeated military threats, including shelling, drone strikes, and nearby explosions, which have heightened fears of a potential nuclear incident. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has maintained a permanent presence at the facility to monitor safety conditions and provide neutral assessments to the global community. Over the past two years, IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi has repeatedly warned that any military activity in the vicinity of a nuclear installation is unacceptable and poses severe risks to regional and international security. This volatile environment forms the critical backdrop to the recent explosions and visible smoke observed near the plant, emphasizing the urgent need for restraint and enhanced protection of nuclear infrastructure.
