Trump Hosts Landmark Agreement Ending Decades-Long Nagorno-Karabakh Conflict

On August 8, 2025, Armenia and Azerbaijan reached a historic peace deal at the White House, with U.S. President Donald Trump hosting the event. Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev signed the agreement, which is intended to bring an end to nearly forty years of conflict over the Nagorno-Karabakh region. The deal grants the United States exclusive rights to develop a vital South Caucasus transit route, officially named the “Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity,” connecting Azerbaijan to the Nakhchivan region through Armenian territory. Alongside the peace accord, the United States also signed separate agreements with both Armenia and Azerbaijan covering cooperation in energy, technology, infrastructure, trade, and security. Both national leaders publicly praised Donald Trump’s mediation efforts and expressed their intention to nominate him for the Nobel Peace Prize. This agreement is seen as a major geopolitical shift, reducing Russia’s influence in the region and strengthening the role of the United States.

BACKGROUND

The conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan over the Nagorno-Karabakh region has lasted for nearly four decades, causing thousands of deaths and displacements. Nagorno-Karabakh is a disputed territory internationally recognized as part of Azerbaijan but populated mainly by ethnic Armenians. The conflict escalated into full-scale wars in the early 1990s and again in 2020, leading to significant casualties and destruction. Multiple ceasefires and peace talks failed to bring lasting solutions due to deep-rooted historical, ethnic, and political tensions. Regional powers, including Russia and Turkey, played influential roles in the conflict, often supporting opposing sides. The recent 2025 peace agreement, brokered by the United States and signed by Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, marks a significant breakthrough. It aims to end decades of hostility by establishing peace, creating a new transit corridor, and fostering cooperation in various sectors. This historic deal reflects a shift in regional dynamics and offers hope for stability in the South Caucasus.
