Brazil’s Supreme Court put former President Jair Bolsonaro under house arrest in Brasília

Brazil’s Supreme Court placed former President Jair Bolsonaro under house arrest in Brasília on Monday, August 4, 2025, after Justice Alexandre de Moraes issued the order. The court explained that Jair Bolsonaro violated earlier restrictions which required him to stay off social media and wear an electronic ankle monitor. On Sunday, August 3, 2025, Jair Bolsonaro addressed supporters in Rio de Janeiro through his son Flávio Bolsonaro, breaking the court’s rules. The judges said Jair Bolsonaro also used the social media accounts of his sons to post messages urging action against the Supreme Court and asking for foreign involvement. As part of the house arrest, authorities seized all mobile phones from Jair Bolsonaro’s home, and only close family members and lawyers are allowed to meet him. This action is linked to the case accusing Jair Bolsonaro of planning a coup after losing the 2022 election to President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. The arrest has also raised tensions with the United States, where President Donald Trump criticized Justice Alexandre de Moraes and announced a 50% tariff on Brazilian products. Jair Bolsonaro’s legal team has said they will challenge the decision and reject any claim that court orders were broken.

BACKGROUND

Jair Bolsonaro, Brazil’s former president, has faced mounting legal challenges since losing the 2022 election to President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. After the defeat, supporters of Jair Bolsonaro stormed government buildings in Brasília in early 2023, drawing comparisons to the January 6 attack in the United States. The Supreme Court launched investigations into alleged coup plots and the spread of misinformation targeting democratic institutions. Justice Alexandre de Moraes imposed restrictions on Jair Bolsonaro, including a social media ban and the use of an electronic ankle monitor, to prevent further political agitation. Despite these measures, Jair Bolsonaro continued to engage indirectly with his supporters through family channels, which the court saw as a breach of its orders. His house arrest is the latest step in a series of legal actions aimed at holding him accountable for attempts to undermine Brazil’s democratic process and connections to unrest following his election loss.
